Monument of Zalongo, Monumental sculpture at Mount Zalongo, Epirus, Greece.
The Monument of Zalongo is a monumental sculpture on Mount Zalongo in Epirus composed of six abstract female figures joined together in a continuous composition. The structure spans 18 meters in length and rises 13 meters high.
The monument was built between 1954 and 1960 to commemorate the women of Souli, who in 1803 chose to leap from the cliff rather than surrender to occupation. This event became central to the region's memory of freedom and resistance.
The six limestone figures represent the choices and emotions of Greek women facing an impossible situation. Their linked hands show solidarity and collective determination.
Visitors reach the monument by climbing 410 steps starting from Saint Dimitrios Monastery. The ascent is steady and allows for a gradual pace depending on individual fitness levels.
The sculpture incorporates roughly 4300 limestone blocks transported from a distant quarry location. Each block measures approximately 40x30x25 centimeters and their assembly demonstrates the scale of effort required for this commemoration.
