Temple of Zeus in Nemea

The Temple of Zeus features 32 limestone columns, each measuring 42 feet in height and constructed from 13 individual drum sections weighing 2.5 tons each.

Built around 330 BC, this temple replaced an earlier structure from the 6th century BC that was destroyed by fire and measured approximately 10 by 36 meters.

Before participating in the Nemean Games competitions, athletes performed rituals at the temple to demonstrate their respect and dedication to Zeus.

The temple grounds contain nine standing columns, with three original structures and six reconstructed pieces as part of ongoing preservation efforts.

The temple incorporates three distinct architectural styles within its design: Doric columns on the exterior, and Corinthian and Ionic elements in the interior.
