Weiler Building, Historical building in Makrygianni, Greece
The Weiler Building is a structure in Makrygianni featuring German neo-romantic architecture with stone masonry walls, located directly across from the New Acropolis Museum. It now serves as a research center focused on Acropolis architecture and ancient construction methods.
The building was designed in 1836 by Bavarian military engineer Wilhelm von Weiler and originally served as an Army Hospital. It was converted into police barracks in 1920 before eventually becoming a research facility.
Inside the building, a center dedicated to Acropolis history displays plaster casts and original terracotta fragments from different periods. These collections help visitors understand how the ancient site's buildings and decorations changed over time.
The building is located on Makriyianni Street and is easily accessible on foot from the Acropolis Museum area. Visitors should note that the site functions primarily as a research facility, so visiting may require advance arrangements or may be limited.
During the battles of 1944, the building's original coated surface was damaged and removed, exposing the natural stone beneath. These visible marks remain today and tell the story of the turbulent events Athens experienced during that period.
