Mochlos site

The coastal settlement extends across an islet that was formerly connected to Crete's mainland by a narrow strip of land extending into the Gulf of Mirabello.

Archaeological excavations initiated by Richard Seager in 1908 revealed extensive burial grounds containing elaborate tombs and precious artifacts dating from 3100 BC to 10th century AD.

The settlement developed strong trade connections, importing obsidian from Milos and establishing metal workshops that produced sophisticated gold jewelry between 2500-1500 BC.

Visitors access the archaeological site via boats departing from the harbor along the Agios Nikolaos-Siteia road, where informative signs guide them through the excavated areas.

Ten Late Minoan metal collections discovered at the site include foundry materials, trading goods, and ceremonial objects linking the settlement to copper sources in Cyprus.
