Monastery Panagia Chrysoleontissa

The Monastery Panagia Chrysoleontissa is an Orthodox religious community situated on a mountain plateau in central Aegina with whitewashed walls, terra-cotta roofing, and a prominent blue dome accompanied by a tall tower. The compound is enclosed by fortified walls that protect the grounds where daily religious life unfolds.

The monastery was established between 1600 and 1614 during Ottoman occupation when monks relocated inland to escape pirate raids that threatened their coastal settlement. This move to the mountain plateau marked a turning point for the community's survival and stability.
