Monastery Panagia Chrysoleontissa

Monastery Panagia Chrysoleontissa, Orthodox monastery in central Aegina, Greece

The Monastery Panagia Chrysoleontissa is an Orthodox religious community situated on a mountain plateau in central Aegina with whitewashed walls, terra-cotta roofing, and a prominent blue dome accompanied by a tall tower. The compound is enclosed by fortified walls that protect the grounds where daily religious life unfolds.

The monastery was established between 1600 and 1614 during Ottoman occupation when monks relocated inland to escape pirate raids that threatened their coastal settlement. This move to the mountain plateau marked a turning point for the community's survival and stability.

The monastery serves as an active place of worship where nuns maintain religious practices and connect with pilgrims who visit the grounds. The community here follows Orthodox traditions that shape daily life and spiritual routines.

Reaching the monastery involves walking uphill on mountain pathways with multiple entry points from nearby villages and religious sites in the area. Sturdy footwear and a moderate amount of time are needed to complete the climb comfortably.

The grounds house an unexpected collection of domesticated and semi-wild animals including ostriches alongside sheep and goats that roam freely beneath ancient oak trees. This animal diversity gives the place an unusual rustic character that visitors rarely expect to find.
