Agios Athanaios Macedonian tombs NW

The rectangular tomb structure contains an entrance passage, an antechamber, and a burial chamber carved into the hillside near Thessaloniki.

Built during the last quarter of the fourth century BC, this tomb belonged to a military leader and contained valuable artifacts including weapons and armor.

The tomb walls display detailed frescoes depicting a symposium scene with six participants, musicians, and soldiers in traditional Macedonian dress.

The archaeological site requires advance planning for visits, as access hours vary throughout the year and guided tours enhance the experience.

The preserved murals inside the tomb show golden-winged griffons in the pediment and a rare representation of arriving guests both walking and riding horses.
