University of Strasbourg, Research university in Strasbourg, France
The University of Strasbourg is a research institution spread across six locations in the city, hosting more than 52,000 students and 3,300 researchers in numerous academic fields. The different campuses offer lecture halls, libraries, and specialized laboratories scattered throughout the city, each with its own focus areas.
Johannes Sturm founded a Lutheran humanist educational institution in 1538, which received university status through royal charter in 1621. The institution changed between German and French control several times, especially after 1870 and 1918, shaping its structure and direction.
The institution carries a name that reflects its roots in the city and today connects local students with peers from across Europe in classrooms and laboratories. Many buildings still display inscriptions and architectural elements that recall the shifts between French and German administration.
The locations are spread throughout the city, some near the center, others in residential neighborhoods or on the outskirts. Public transport connects the individual campuses, and many buildings are open to visitors during the day.
The institution has produced 18 Nobel Prize laureates and one Fields Medal recipient, highlighting its contribution to global science. Some of the laboratories and research centers still work today on projects that build on the work of these laureates.
