1st arrondissement of Marseille

The 1st arrondissement spans 1.778 square kilometers and contains six distinct neighborhoods: Belsunce, Le Chapitre, Noailles, Opera, Saint-Charles, and Thiers.

Created on October 19, 1946, during Marseille's administrative restructuring, this district became a central part of the city's governmental organization.

The Noailles neighborhood features France's oldest hardware store, Maison Empereur, established in 1827, alongside numerous traditional shops and markets.

With approximately 39,436 residents as of 2021, the district maintains a population density of 22,180 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The district houses the Marché des Capucins, which occupies the former site of a 17th-century Capuchin convent that was converted to national property in 1791.
