Bagnères-de-Luchon, Thermal spa resort in Haute-Garonne, France
Bagnères-de-Luchon is a commune in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitanie region, known for its thermal springs and located in the French part of the Pyrenees. The town stretches along the One river in the valley between forested slopes and mountain peaks that are covered with snow in winter.
The Romans built thermal facilities here over 2000 years ago, laying the foundation for the later development of the town. In the 19th century, the spa was visited by Empress Eugénie and other European nobility, which brought it international fame.
The name comes from the Latin word for baths and points to the long tradition as a spa town. Visitors today see the elegant colonnades and bathhouses lining the main square, which serve as a meeting point for spa guests.
The thermal facilities are located in the center and are easily accessible on foot, while hiking trails lead directly from the town into the mountains. Snow covers the higher elevations from December to April, which may limit access to some mountain paths.
A cable car connects the town center directly with the Superbagnères ski station and allows visitors to switch between thermal baths and slopes. The ride takes about twenty minutes and overcomes an elevation difference of almost 1000 meters (3300 feet) through forest and open terrain.
