Musigny AOC, Grand Cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny, France
Musigny AOC is a Grand Cru vineyard in the village of Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte-d'Or, planted mainly with Pinot Noir on a limestone and clay slope facing east. The vineyard is divided into several parcels owned by different producers, and it sits on the lower part of the hillside at the heart of the Côte de Nuits.
Vines have been grown on this hillside since the Middle Ages, with monks from the region playing a central role in shaping the land. The Grand Cru status was officially granted in 1936 when France introduced its national wine classification system.
The name Musigny comes from an old local place name still seen on every bottle produced here. Walking along the parcels, you can notice how the slope changes slightly between plots, and how each grower marks their section of the vineyard in a different way.
The vineyard runs alongside a small road between Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot, and it is easy to reach on foot or by bike from either village. Since the land is privately owned, visitors should stay on the public path and contact producers directly to arrange any tasting.
White Musigny, made from Chardonnay, is recognized as a separate wine under the same Grand Cru name, which almost never happens in Burgundy. Only one producer still makes it, and the Chardonnay plot within the vineyard covers less than 1 hectare.
