Bonneval-sur-Arc, Alpine village in Savoie, France

Bonneval-sur-Arc is a mountain village in the French Alps situated between 1,759 and 3,642 meters in elevation at the foot of the Iseran Pass. The settlement spreads across several connected areas and is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and alpine meadows.

The village grew from settlement across four distinct areas that reflect different phases of mountain colonization. This multi-sectored structure shows how human occupation developed across this high alpine zone over time.

Residents keep mountain traditions alive through local cheesemaking and traditional stone building, which shape the village's appearance. These practices are visible in the festivals celebrated throughout the year and in how people maintain their homes.

The village offers various lodging options from hotels to mountain refuges to suit different visitor needs. At this elevation, expect cool temperatures year-round and bring appropriate clothing regardless of season.

The village experiences extreme temperature swings, dropping below minus 8 degrees Celsius in January and rising above 12 degrees in July. These sharp shifts shape the rhythm of the alpine year and influence when visitors can best experience the place.

The most beautiful historic villages of France: stones, alleys, and open-air stories

Throughout France's regions lie villages that seem frozen in time. These places are built from stone, wood, and light, where history is written across facades and paved streets. Some nestle in valleys, others cling to cliffs or look out over vineyards. You find old houses, squares with arcades, castles, Romanesque churches, and sometimes a river winding between gardens. From Breton granite to Alsatian timber-framed houses, from southern golden limestone to Alpine shingle roofs, each tells of a way of life, a color, a voice. These villages keep the pace of their era and the sounds of daily life intact. Rocamadour clings to a cliff above a river, while Riquewihr sits nestled among vineyards. Gordes and Les Baux-de-Provence spread across Provence hills, and Locronan and Barfleur reveal Breton and Norman tradition. In the Dordogne, La Roque-Gageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac hug river banks, while Vézelay and Conques echo pilgrimage routes. Saint-Émilion rises among wine country, and Eguisheim circles its church in Alsatian fashion. These villages show the deeper face of France—visible only when you take time to stop and look.
