La Défense

La Défense is a business district and tourist destination in the western Paris area, spreading across three municipalities. The glass and steel towers form a modern center for companies, shopping centers, and restaurants.

Planning began in 1958 to distribute the capital's economy to the surrounding area and replace old factories with modern office buildings. Over the decades, the district grew and became a major location for international companies in France.

Residents often gather on the esplanade, a vast pedestrian plaza that connects office towers with public space and is crossed daily by commuters. The name recalls the resistance during the siege of Paris in the 19th century, when the city defended its independence.

Visitors can explore the district comfortably on foot, as most areas are accessible to pedestrians and wide pathways connect the different plazas. On weekdays, the area is busiest, while the weekend offers a quieter atmosphere.

A piece of the Berlin Wall stands in one of the public areas and recalls the German reunification. The Bassin Takis features floating sculptures that move with the wind and produce sounds.
