Port of Marseille-Fos, Maritime trading complex in Marseille, France.

The Port of Marseille-Fos is a large maritime hub divided into two sections: one in eastern Marseille centered on traditional basins and one in the west near Fos-sur-Mer with industrial facilities. Modern terminals here handle containers, grain, oil, and passengers every day.

The first new harbor basins were built in 1844 at La Joliette to handle growing ship traffic. During the 20th century, the facility expanded far beyond the city and became one of Europe's largest ports.

The port has shaped Marseille's role as a Mediterranean crossroads where merchants and sailors from around the world have long gathered. Today, you can still sense this international character at the waterfront.

The port spans several districts with different purposes, so it helps to know which section you want to visit beforehand. Some zones are open to the public while others are restricted industrial areas.

The facility holds one of the Mediterranean's largest dry docks, allowing even massive ships to be repaired and maintained. This impressive structure is why many large vessels come here for upkeep work.
