Cauterets, Winter sports resort in Hautes-Pyrénées, France.
Cauterets is a ski resort in the Hautes-Pyrénées in southwest France, sitting above 5,900 feet (1,800 m) and spread across several slope areas. The runs are connected by a network of gondolas and chairlifts that start directly from the town center.
Cauterets was already known as a spa town in Roman times, and its thermal springs drew writers and aristocrats from across Europe throughout the 1800s. The shift toward winter sports came later, gradually turning the town into the ski destination it is today.
Cauterets is known for its thermal baths, which are still open today and sit right in the center of town alongside the ski facilities. Walking through the older streets, you can see 19th-century spa buildings that give the place a character very different from most ski resorts.
The lifts depart from the town center, so you can reach the slopes on foot from most accommodations without needing a car. Rental shops and ski schools are available on site for those who need equipment or lessons.
Cauterets sits within the boundary of the Pyrenees National Park, which means some of the upper slopes border protected land where wildlife can sometimes be spotted. On clear days, the observatory on top of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre is visible from the higher runs.
