Collegiate Church of Saint-André, Grenoble, 13th century collegiate church in Place Saint-André, France
The Collegiate Church of Saint-André is a religious building in the medieval style located at Place Saint-André in central Grenoble. The structure features a central nave with low transepts and displays a mix of brick and limestone, creating a modest yet solid appearance typical of its construction period.
Construction started in 1228 under Dauphin André to house a community of twelve canons relocated from Champagnier. By the 14th century, a Gothic spire was added to the building, marking a significant shift in its design.
The name Saint-André refers to the patron saint whose veneration shaped the spiritual life of the community. Services held here by the canons marked important moments in the city's religious calendar and local celebrations.
The church sits in the heart of Grenoble's pedestrian zone next to the former Palace of Parliament, making it easy to visit while exploring the old town. Access is available year-round, and you can view the exterior and surroundings without restrictions.
The Gothic spire completed in 1331 housed the first public clock in Grenoble when it was installed in 1398, following an agreement with the canons. For many people in the city, this timepiece served as their only way to keep track of the hours.
