Place Grenette

Place Grenette is the central square in Grenoble, featuring a decorative fountain from 1825 with four cherubs positioned above dolphins representing the Dauphiné region. The square is surrounded by buildings with shops and cafés on the ground level, creating a traditional French plaza layout.

In the 17th century, the square served as the primary marketplace for grain and livestock trading, supporting local commerce. Over time, it transformed from a pure trading hub into a central public gathering place for the city.

Cafés with outdoor terraces line the square, offering a window into local daily routines where residents gather to eat regional specialties. The outdoor seating becomes a social hub, especially during warmer months when people linger over drinks and conversation.

Multiple tram lines serve the Hubert Dubedout station, which connects directly to the square, making it easy to reach by public transport. The pedestrian-friendly area around the square allows for easy exploration of nearby streets and shops.

Napoleon Bonaparte conducted a military review of his troops here on March 9, 1815, before heading to Lyon. This historical episode connects the square to a pivotal moment in French history.
