Forges of Trignac, Industrial heritage site in Trignac, France
The Forges of Trignac is a steel manufacturing complex near Saint-Nazaire with remains of furnaces, coal silos, and railway tracks from when it was operating. The site covers several hectares and shows the full scale of an industrial facility.
The facility was founded in 1879 and produced steel plates until 1943 as the main supplier for shipyards in Saint-Nazaire. Its long operation made it a key economic center for the entire region.
This industrial complex shaped how Trignac grew from a small marsh hamlet into a worker community with its own housing and gardens. The way the town developed around the factory is still visible in how the streets and neighborhoods are arranged today.
The site requires careful navigation due to structural instability of the remaining buildings being monitored by local authorities. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and potential hazards around the older industrial structures.
The facility processed iron ore from Spain and coal from England via a dedicated railway connection to Saint-Nazaire port. This international supply chain made the works more efficient than many competitors.
