Pic de Sotllo, Mountain summit in Montcalm Massif, France
Pic de Sotllo is a sandstone and lutite summit in the Montcalm Massif along the French-Spanish border. Rising to approximately 3,073 meters, it defines the alpine landscape of this Pyrenees region.
The peak has long served as a boundary marker between France and Spain in the Pyrenees. Its early ascents went unrecorded in mountaineering archives, suggesting a history of border crossings rather than formal climbing pursuits.
The peak has different names depending on language: Pic du Port de Sullo in French and Pic del Port de Sollo in Occitan. This naming variety reflects the multilingual heritage of the border region.
Climbers reach the summit via established routes from Vallferrera Valley in Alins. Refuge de Pinet serves as a key starting base and provides a central staging point for the ascent.
Three mountain ponds called Estanyets de Sotllo surround the peak, forming a network of high-altitude lakes. These water bodies at this elevation represent a rare feature of the local geology and hydrology.
