Lac de Creno, Mountain lake in Corsica, France
Lac de Creno is a mountain lake in Corsica situated at 1310 meters elevation, surrounded by forests of pine and larch trees. The water sits in a quiet basin framed by the steep wooded slopes of the Monte Rotondo massif.
The lake was formed through glacial action during ice ages and has shaped the highland landscape ever since. Its current water lilies were introduced deliberately roughly two decades ago as part of environmental management efforts.
Local stories connect this lake to a legend involving Saint Martin and the devil, marked by an iron cross visible near the shore.
Reaching the lake requires a one-hour hike from a parking area above Soccia village, following marked forest trails throughout. The best visiting season is June through September when the lake is ice-free and trails are most passable.
The water contains a small population of carnivorous sundew plants and freezes solid during winter months. These plants thrive in the nutrient-poor water conditions, making the lake botanically distinctive.
