Musée comtois, Regional ethnography museum in Citadelle of Besançon, France
The Musée Comtois displays over 30,000 objects and 75,000 photographs documenting life, traditions, and crafts of the Franche-Comté region through permanent exhibitions.
Established in 1946 by ethnologist Abbé Jean Garneret, who began collecting artifacts in 1936, the museum found its permanent home in Besançon's Citadel in 1960.
The museum's three floors present thematic exhibitions about traditional trades, regional beliefs, puppet theater, and the evolution of local customs over time.
The museum is currently undergoing renovations and will reopen on April 18, 2025, with a new exhibition featuring photographer Marc Paygnard's work.
The top floor houses an extensive collection of regional puppets that demonstrates the historical importance of this art form in Franche-Comté culture.
