Le Parmelan, Mountain summit in Haute-Savoie, France.
Le Parmelan is a limestone summit reaching 1,832 meters in elevation and features steep rock faces that dominate the landscape near Annecy. The mountain is accessible via multiple hiking routes, including the Grand Montoir path equipped with chains and handrails on steep sections.
Mountain trails developed over centuries through local exploration, with the Grand Montoir route becoming established for climbers in the early 20th century. This path was specifically upgraded to make summit access safer and more accessible for a wider range of hikers.
The summit cross is a traditional marker visited respectfully by hikers and climbers. The nearby mountain hut serves meals and provides shelter to mountaineers from June to September.
The climb is most pleasant during warmer months, with proper footwear and weather-resistant clothing being important as conditions at the top can be windy and cool. The Grand Montoir path with its chains provides extra security, but sure-footedness and comfort with heights are necessary, especially in wet conditions.
The mountain functions as a launch site for paragliders and hang gliders, offering views of Lake Annecy from the air. The thermal winds in this region make it a preferred spot for air sports enthusiasts from across the area.
