Cascade de Morette, Mountain waterfall in La Balme-de-Thuy, France.
Cascade de Morette is a waterfall in the limestone valleys of the Alps that drops in several distinct tiers as it descends toward the valley floor. Each section reveals different rock formations and water patterns depending on the season and flow rate.
The area served as a refuge for French Resistance fighters during World War II who used the mountain terrain for shelter and operations. The alpine landscape provided natural cover for resistance activities in the region.
The waterfall circuit connects to prehistoric excavation sites and a museum that documents the regional history of Haute-Savoie during World War II.
The waterfall can be reached by driving through the valley roads and following the marked hiking paths from the parking area. Facilities including restrooms are available near the main trailheads for visitor comfort.
The waterfall reaches its strongest flow in spring when mountain snow melts and feeds the Nant Debout river with extra water. At this time the falls sound louder and move faster, creating a different experience than quieter summer months.
