La Poudrière

La Poudrière is an arts center in downtown Cayenne housed in a rectangular building with terracotta tile roofing. The space contains exhibition areas and workshop sections designed for artistic presentations and activities.

The building was constructed in 1865 as a military powder magazine for storing explosives. Over time it was converted and now serves as a cultural venue.

The building was never completed according to standard underground powder magazine specifications and remained above ground instead. This departure from the original plans makes it an unexpected example of how its purpose adapted over time.
