Villa La Mauresque, Rationalist villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France

Villa La Mauresque is a rationalist residence in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat with a rectangular floor plan centered on an inner courtyard with two stacked galleries. A tower rises at the southeast corner with white painted facades that define the building's exterior.

The property was built at the start of the 20th century by Felix Charmettant on Cap Ferrat land and initially reflected Moorish style influences. It passed to writer Somerset Maugham in 1927, who made it his preferred residence for decades.

The villa served as a meeting place where writers and artists gathered to exchange ideas and spend time together. You can still sense how this setting fostered creative conversations and memorable encounters.

The residence contains seven bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a library located in the tower, all connected by an internal elevator system. The layout guides visitors naturally through different functional areas of the house.

An unexploded bomb was discovered in Somerset Maugham's bedroom when he returned to the house after World War II. This rare wartime artifact became a striking reminder of the conflict that affected the French coast.
