Peisey-Vallandry, Ski resort in Tarentaise Valley, France
Peisey-Vallandry is a ski resort in the Savoie department of France, made up of several villages sitting at around 1600 meters in the Tarentaise Valley. It connects to the Paradiski network, one of the largest linked ski areas in the Alps, which also covers Les Arcs and La Plagne.
The villages around Peisey-Nancroix were farming communities for centuries before winter sports arrived in the region. From the second half of the 20th century onward, ski infrastructure grew steadily alongside the existing settlements.
The old village of Peisey still has stone houses and wooden balconies built in the traditional Savoyard style. Walking through it gives a clear sense of how mountain communities shaped their homes around the alpine setting.
The resort sits at around 1600 meters, so warm layers and sturdy footwear are worth packing even for short stays. First-time visitors should give themselves a little time to adjust to the altitude before heading out on the slopes.
The link between Peisey-Vallandry and the rest of the Paradiski area depends on a single cable car, the Vanoise Express. This cabin crosses a wide valley and is one of the largest double-decker cable cars in the world, carrying skiers between two separate mountain massifs.
