Réserve naturelle nationale des Hauts de Villaroger, National nature reserve in Villaroger, France
Réserve naturelle nationale des Hauts de Villaroger is a protected nature reserve in the French Alps featuring forests, alpine meadows, and glacial landscapes. The terrain includes steep slopes, rocky cliffs, and two mountain lakes at varying elevations.
The protected area was established in 1991 to safeguard natural habitats absent from the nearby Vanoise National Park. This designation recognized the conservation value of these mountain landscapes.
The area takes its name from the surrounding heights that have long served as local landmarks. Visitors can observe how mountain wildlife moves through the open spaces and rocky terrain throughout the day.
Two marked trails with interpretive signs allow visitors to explore the area throughout the year, though weather and snow conditions require careful planning. The best visiting season is from June through September when trails are most accessible.
The elevation change of over 2,000 meters creates dramatically different ecosystems from bottom to top. Walking through these transitions from dense forest to open alpine terrain shows how nature adapts to extreme changes in altitude.
