La Cochette

La Cochette is a limestone-based summit in the Chartreuse mountains located between the Isere and Savoie departments, reaching approximately 1618 meters in height. The white and grey rock faces form the outer shell of the peak and display clear geological layering patterns.

The summit gained recognition for alpine activities after the establishment of the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park in the region. The limestone that forms the peak originated during ancient marine periods, giving it the geology visible today.

The summit serves as a natural landmark that guides travelers through the Chartreuse region and holds significance for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the local mountains. The exposed limestone cliffs shape how the place is perceived and used by those moving through the area.

Access to the summit begins from the village of Entremont le Vieux via the Col du Grapillon trail and demands solid hiking equipment and reasonable fitness levels. The terrain is rocky and becomes slippery when wet, so footwear with good grip is essential for safe travel.

The peak contains rare limestone deposits from the Fontanil formation that occasionally reveal fossils from ancient sea creatures. These geological layers tell the story of a vanished ocean landscape that once covered this area millions of years ago.
