Musée des Alpilles, Museum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
The Musée des Alpilles is a museum housed in the Hôtel Mistral de Mondragon, a Renaissance-era building in the center of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Its collections cover the natural environment, daily life, local crafts, and art produced in and around the Alpilles region.
The building that houses the museum was classified as a historic monument in 1862 and dates back to the Renaissance period, when it served as a private mansion. The museum itself was founded in 1919 and underwent a major restoration between 2002 and 2005.
The museum stands at the corner of Place Favier and Rue Carnot, within easy walking distance of the town church and city hall. Parking is available on the Cours, the ring road around the old center, and at the Place de la République car park nearby.
Among the collections is material related to the Hypselosaurus, a dinosaur whose traces have been found in the area. The museum also has a studio dedicated to typography and engraving, which sets it apart from most local history museums.
