Bec de l'Orient, Mountain summit in Isère, France
Bec de l'Orient is a mountain peak in the Vercors region with limestone slopes and is situated within a regional natural park. The summit stands at about 1,570 meters (5,150 feet) and forms part of a larger plateau landscape.
The mountain served as a strategic location during the Second World War when French Resistance forces used the area to monitor mountain passes in 1943. This region became important to the armed struggle against German occupation.
The plateau surrounding the summit connects villages that rely on winter sports and mountain activities as part of their way of life. Local people use these heights as a natural meeting point throughout the seasons.
Marked hiking trails start from the parking area near Gève and lead to the summit with varying difficulty levels. Plan for a full morning or afternoon for the hike, and bring sturdy footwear and plenty of water.
An iron cross stands at the peak and serves as a visible landmark from great distances. This cross has become a recognizable marker that guides hikers to the summit.
