Morne Chapeau Nègre, Mountain summit in Pitons du Carbet, Martinique, France

Morne Chapeau Nègre is a summit in the Pitons du Carbet range with steep slopes draped in thick tropical forest. The mountain rises to roughly 875 meters and offers dense green vegetation throughout its hiking routes.

During the 18th century colonial period, this mountain area served as a natural dividing line between the two main settlements on the island. Its position shaped how different regions developed and remained separated.

The mountain gets its name from its distinctive shape that resembles a hat when viewed from the surrounding valleys. Locals and visitors often recognize the peak by this visual characteristic from across the island.

The hike starts at Ancienne Station Thermale d'Absalon and involves steep stretches with slippery ground, especially after rain. Good hiking boots and plenty of water are essential because the heat and humidity make the climb demanding.

From certain sections of the ridge, hikers can see both the Caribbean Sea and the tropical valleys below at the same time, creating a striking double view. This vantage point reveals how diverse the island's landscape is in a single moment.
