El Gran Facha, Mountain summit in Pyrenees, France.
El Gran Facha is a mountain summit in the Pyrenees on the French-Spanish border, rising 2721 meters above sea level. The peak serves as a geographical landmark between two countries and is connected by several trekking routes from different starting points.
The first documented ascent took place in summer 1874 when mountaineer Henry Russell reached the summit with guide Cauterets Latour. This early climb marked the beginning of the mountain's recognition as a trekking destination.
The mountain has different names depending on which side you approach from: La Grande Fache on the French side and Cúspide de Bachimaña on the Spanish side, reflecting how language changes across the border.
The summit can be reached from both the French and Spanish sides, with the French approach starting from Wallon valley. Plan enough time for the trek and prepare for changeable mountain weather, as conditions can shift quickly at altitude.
Around the mountain sit three natural cirques and numerous glacial lakes called Ibóns in the Basque language. These water features create a distinctive landscape and offer multiple trekking options beyond the main summit route.
