Le Grand Mottey, Mountain summit in Savoie, France
Le Grand Mottey is a mountain summit in the Vanoise range standing at approximately 1658 meters. Several marked trails crisscross the slopes and lead to the top from different directions.
For centuries, shepherds used the mountain as grazing land for their herds in the summer months. This pastoral tradition remained central to the local economy and landscape management for generations.
The mountain served as summer pasture for livestock herds brought up from the valleys by shepherds. This traditional use shaped the open grassland you see today around the summit.
You can reach the summit via marked trails starting from nearby Tignes ski resort and other valleys in the area. The best time to hike is from June to September when snow melts and trails are in good condition.
On clear days, you can see both French and Swiss Alpine ranges from the summit at the same time, revealing its position near the border region. This vantage point lets you grasp how the Alpine chain stretches across the international boundary.
