Rocher de l'Yret, Mountain summit in Hautes-Alpes, France.
Rocher de l'Yret is a mountain summit reaching 2,656 meters (8,714 feet) in the Massif des Écrins. The peak is known for its steep rock faces and a distinctive ridge that defines its appearance.
The climbing route along this peak was substantially redesigned around 2000 to emphasize natural rock passages. This shift moved away from heavy reliance on installed metal climbing aids.
Local mountaineers maintain numerous marked trails around Rocher de l'Yret, connecting the peak to the broader network of Écrins National Park paths.
Hikers begin at Route des Guibertes near Les Charmettes and face a climb with roughly 1,340 meters (4,400 feet) of elevation gain over nearly 12 kilometers (7.5 miles). The route combines regular hiking with rock scrambling and climbing sections.
The ridge ascent requires climbers to switch between opposite sides of the peak, traversing back and forth along exposed rock. This technique allows climbers to follow natural lines and features on the mountain.
