Glacier d'Arsine, Alpine glacier at 2500 meters in Hautes-Alpes, France
Glacier d'Arsine is an Alpine glacier situated at around 2500 meters in the Hautes-Alpes region. The ice melts continuously and feeds two lakes at its base, separated by a natural moraine wall that divides the meltwater.
Scientists have monitored this glacier since 1940, tracking its behavior and changes over decades. A drainage canal was built in 1986 to prevent potential flooding of settlements located downstream from the meltwater.
The glacier serves as a field laboratory for scientists studying climate changes in the Écrins National Park's mountain environment.
The hiking path starts from the Pont d'Arsine parking area and follows the marked GR54 route through mountain meadows. The walk is quite long and demands solid fitness, as you gain elevation through alpine terrain.
The two lakes at the glacier's base display shifting water colors that change with the seasons, reflecting variations in sediment and meltwater composition. This changing palette makes the landscape visually different depending on when you visit.
