Pic Gaspard, Mountain summit in Hautes-Alpes, France.
Pic Gaspard is a summit in the Massif des Écrins in the Hautes-Alpes, standing at 3,881 meters. The mountain features steep rock faces and offers several different climbing routes for experienced mountaineers.
The mountain was first climbed in July 1878, led by Henry Duhamel together with Pierre Gaspard, his son, and Christophe Roderon. This first ascent established the standard route that climbers still use today.
The peak carries the name of Pierre Gaspard, a skilled mountain guide from the Oisans valley who was famous for his climbing abilities. His name reflects the strong mountaineering traditions of this region.
Climbers can find accommodation at the Refuge du Pavé, located south of the summit and serving as a base for the ascent. The area offers different approach routes depending on experience level and preferred climbing style.
From this peak, photographer Marc Bret captured one of the longest recorded lines of sight on Earth. The photograph reached all the way to Pic de Finestrelles and shows the extraordinary clarity from this height.
