Meije, Mountain summit in Isère, France

La Meije is a summit in the Massif des Écrins range, rising to 3983 meters with multiple glaciers covering its slopes. The mountain features a long, jagged ridge with several distinct peaks that create a striking profile.

The mountain was first successfully summited in 1877, marking a milestone in the development of Alpine climbing in France. This early ascent helped establish the peak as a classic objective for experienced mountaineers.

The mountain holds significance in French alpinism, with climbers from different backgrounds attempting its various routes. Its steep faces and famous paths have made it a well-known destination among those who pursue mountain climbing.

Two mountain shelters provide accommodation for climbers making multi-day attempts, with the higher one positioned near the start of technical sections. Allow several days for the climb and bring appropriate equipment, as the route requires altitude acclimatization and climbing skills.

The summit system comprises five separate peaks, with the highest point called Doigt de Dieu, requiring technical climbing to move between them. This configuration creates an additional challenge beyond reaching the main summit.
