Cimetière du Montparnasse, Historic burial ground in 14th arrondissement, France

Montparnasse Cemetery is a 19-hectare burial ground in the 14th arrondissement, divided by Rue Émile Richard into two separate sections connected by paths lined with trees. It contains about 35,000 graves ranging from simple headstones to substantial monuments and memorials.

This burial ground opened in 1824 after Paris banned cemeteries within city limits and repurposed land from a former monastery to serve this purpose. The creation addressed the city's need for space outside its walls to handle burials.

The cemetery holds graves of many French writers and artists whose names are inscribed on simple or elaborate tombstones throughout the grounds. Walking among them, visitors can trace the connection between this place and the city's intellectual history.

The site is easy to walk around on marked paths between both sections, with trees providing shade throughout. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for varying light and weather conditions depending on the season.

A preserved windmill structure on the grounds dates back to the Brothers of Charity estate and marks the agricultural past of the Montparnasse neighborhood. This building stands as a quiet reminder of how rural the area was before becoming an urban district.
