14th arrondissement of Paris

The 14th arrondissement occupies 5.6 square kilometers on the Left Bank, containing four main neighborhoods: Montparnasse, Parc-de-Montsouris, Petit-Montrouge, and Plaisance.

The area became an official district during the 1860 expansion of Paris, when the city reorganized into twenty administrative zones under Napoleon III.

The Paris Observatory, founded in 1667, stands as the oldest astronomical research center worldwide and maintains its scientific research operations within the district.

The district houses 136,368 residents as of 2021, with numerous educational facilities including the Cité Internationale Universitaire and Paris School of Economics.

The Paris Catacombs, located beneath the district, contain millions of human remains transferred from overcrowded cemeteries during the 17th century.
