Habitation Leyritz, Colonial estate in Basse-Pointe, Martinique, France
Habitation Leyritz is a colonial plantation house in Basse-Pointe with multiple protected buildings from the late 1600s. The property contains a main mansion, wash house, fountain, basin, and hydraulic infrastructure spread across the grounds.
Michel de Leyritz, a royal secretary, founded this 500-hectare estate in the 18th century. The property initially produced sugar but later shifted to rum manufacturing.
The name and arrangement of buildings reveal how colonial life was structured and how farming shaped daily routines here. Walking through, you notice how the main residence was separated from the work areas, each serving a distinct purpose in the operation.
This estate requires advance booking for visits and operates on a limited seasonal schedule. Plan your trip around special events like European Heritage Days when the property is most accessible to visitors.
The site received restoration funding in 2021 to repair damage from a major hurricane that occurred years earlier. These improvements help preserve original details that would have been lost otherwise.

Martinique reveals itself away from the main tourist routes. The island has nature reserves, historic sites and remote beaches waiting to be explored. Inland you will find waterfalls, hiking trails and colonial-era buildings. Along the coast sit black sand beaches, small coves and offshore islands. Visitors can walk through botanical gardens, visit museums about volcanoes and see former sugar plantations. This collection shows places that display the real character of the island. Îlet Oscar offers views across Le François bay. Habitation Clément and other former plantations tell stories of the island's past. Balata Gardens showcases tropical plants in a setting of natural beauty. Cap 110 and Anse Noire feature dark sand beaches with views out to sea. On the Caravelle Peninsula and around Le Prêcheur you will find coastal spots that see fewer visitors. Montagne Pelée and the Musée Volcanologique in Saint-Pierre document volcanic activity. Hikers can trek to Cascade Didier or climb into the Pitons du Carbet. Historic buildings such as Cathédrale Saint-Louis and Bibliothèque Schoelcher stand in Fort-de-France.
