Aire d'attraction de Paris

The zona de atracción de París is a functional area in northern France that spans almost nineteen hundred municipalities across seventeen departments, linking the Île-de-France region with neighboring territories. This zone brings together all places whose residents commute mainly to Paris or its immediate surroundings for work.

The French national statistics office INSEE introduced this new classification in 2020 to measure urban areas differently and better reflect commuting patterns. The method replaced older systems that relied more heavily on municipal boundaries and less on work mobility.

The functional area contains multiple departments including Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, and Val-de-Marne, each contributing distinct regional characteristics to the greater Paris region.

The zone serves statistical purposes and cannot be seen or visited on the ground, as it only groups municipalities by commuting behavior. Those traveling through the area will notice no borders or signs marking this administrative division.

The area encompasses 13 million inhabitants across six different French regions, representing 19.5 percent of France's total population.
