Eure-et-Loir, Administrative department in Centre-Val de Loire, France
Eure-et-Loir is an administrative division between the capital and the Loire Valley with grain fields and forested areas. The center lies in a town with a Gothic cathedral, while the remaining settlements are scattered as market towns or small cities.
The territory emerged after the Revolution as an administrative unit from parts of three old provinces. The name combines two rivers that flow through the territory.
The cathedral in the main town became a pilgrimage site because of a Marian relic that drew visitors from across medieval Europe. Pilgrims started the journey to the Atlantic coast there and shaped the rhythm of town life.
Trains from the central station in the capital bring travelers to the larger towns within about one and a half hours. Regional bus lines connect smaller towns to each other.
A cluster of cosmetics manufacturers near the main town produces a large share of French pharmaceutical goods. The concentration of research labs and factories has shaped the local economy for several decades.
