Gorges de l'Infernet

Gorges de l'Infernet is a canyon carved through limestone with vertical rock walls that rise dozens of meters and create a natural passage through the mountains. The valley narrows significantly in several places, forming tight sections that feel enclosed and dramatic.

The canyon formed millions of years ago when water gradually eroded through layers of limestone rock. This slow natural process shaped the walls and depths that define the site today.

Local mountain guides conduct educational tours in the canyon to teach visitors about the geology and ecology of the French Alps.

The main access is via a marked trail starting about 400 meters from the Gillardes parking area, which crosses a bridge on the way. Sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness are needed because of the mountain terrain and elevation.

The Gillardes spring inside the canyon is one of France's largest natural water sources and feeds the site with fresh water year-round. This constant flow shapes the ecosystem and fills the space with the sound of running water.
