Georgian Military Road, Mountain pass road between Tbilisi, Georgia and Vladikavkaz, Russia.
The Georgian Military Road is a mountain road in the Caucasus linking Tbilisi in Georgia with Vladikavkaz in Russia, covering a distance of 212 kilometers. The highest point sits at Jvari Pass at 2,395 meters (7,858 feet), where the route crosses the main Caucasus range.
The passage existed before the 1st century BC as a trade route between northern and southern parts of the Caucasus. In 1783, Russian soldiers transformed the horse trail into a proper road for carriages and military transport.
The name derives from its military use by Russian troops, who established this strategic connection between their southern provinces in the late 18th century. Travelers can spot old fortresses and watchtowers along the route, which now stand as quiet witnesses to this past in the valleys.
The road stays open throughout the year but can close for several days in winter due to heavy snow and avalanches. Travelers should check current conditions before setting out and be ready for rapid weather changes at higher altitudes.
Natural mineral water springs appear along the route, where local residents regularly stop to fill their bottles with fresh mountain water. These springs are considered drinking water of particular purity and are often used by travelers for refreshment.
