Kazbegi Municipality

The Kazbegi Municipality spans across mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from 1,700 to 5,000 meters, containing numerous rivers, lakes, and glacial formations.

During the Russian Empire expansion in the early 19th century, the local Chopikashvili clan maintained control of the region and assisted in tax collection from travelers.

The region preserves traditional Georgian mountain customs through festivals, local cuisine specialties, and ancient architectural structures throughout its territory.

The municipality maintains the Larsi border crossing point with Russia, located 12 kilometers north of Stepantsminda, operating since March 2010.

The Tergi River system, originating from the Khokhi ridge glaciers, extends 85 kilometers through the municipality, forming an extensive water network.
