Golden Fortress - Okros Tsikhe, Medieval fortress in Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia

Okros Tsikhe is a medieval fortress on an inaccessible rocky mount above the Kvabliani valley, north of Shoqa village in Adigeni Municipality. Its thick walls of massive crudely trimmed stone blocks stand up to 10 meters high. The citadel tops a rocky ridge, with ramparts reinforced by large towers descending steeply on the northern and southern slopes. The complex plan follows the irregular rock surface, with several levels and walls merging into the natural rock.

The fortress emerged in the 13th century as a stronghold of the Jaqeli dynasty, a powerful family in Georgian history. It later became a key defensive position during regional conflicts across the following centuries.

The fortress holds meaning for locals as a symbol of medieval Georgian strength and draws visitors who explore the ancient walls and enjoy views across the surrounding landscape. The stone structures speak to a time when such places protected and governed the region.

The main route follows a paved road to Shoka village, from where a steep path leads to the northern entrance gate. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the climb.

The entrance from the north is framed by large boulders, about 1.5 metres high, with walls over two metres thick. The remaining sockets show it once held a double-leaf door secured by a massive wooden bar, whose slot is still visible in the wall.
