Golden Fortress - Okros Tsikhe

The Golden Fortress stands 170 meters above sea level near Boladjuri village, with stone walls rising 10 meters high on a rocky mountain outcrop.

Built in the late 13th century, the fortress served as a stronghold for the Jaqeli dynasty and protected the region during Ottoman invasions in the 16th century.

The fortress represents medieval Georgian military architecture, incorporating natural rock formations into its defensive system while controlling important regional trade routes.

Visitors need to follow a paved road to Shoka village and then continue climbing the steep path to reach the northern entrance of the fortress.

The fortress contains a defensive space between its two original doors where defenders would drop stones and hot resin on invading forces.
