Golden Fortress - Okros Tsikhe

Golden Fortress stands on a rocky mountain near Boladjuri village in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. The structure features stone walls built into natural rock formations with multiple entrances and interior spaces.

The fortress emerged in the 13th century as a stronghold of the Jaqeli dynasty, a powerful family in Georgian history. It later became a key defensive position during regional conflicts across the following centuries.

The fortress holds meaning for locals as a symbol of medieval Georgian strength and draws visitors who explore the ancient walls and enjoy views across the surrounding landscape. The stone structures speak to a time when such places protected and governed the region.

The main route follows a paved road to Shoka village, from where a steep path leads to the northern entrance gate. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the climb.

The fortress contains a clever defensive space between two doors where defenders could drop stones and hot resin on attacking forces. This ingenious defense system shows the skill of medieval engineers in fortress design.
