Kangerlussuaq is a settlement in central Greenland positioned at the head of a long fjord and ringed by tundra. The town functions as a base for exploring the interior and provides access to remote areas that few visitors reach.
The settlement was founded in 1941 as a United States military base called Bluie West-8 during World War II. It remained strategically important through the Cold War until American operations ceased in 1992.
