Ilulissat Airport, airport in Avannaata, Greenland
Ilulissat Airport is a small aerodrome in Avannaata municipality serving the town of Ilulissat, located just a few kilometers from its center. The terminal offers basic facilities including waiting areas, check-in counters, baggage storage, beverage machines, and Wi-Fi to support incoming and outgoing passengers.
The airport opened in 1984, replacing a smaller heliport previously used for local traffic. This establishment allowed fixed-wing aircraft to reach Ilulissat, making travel easier and creating connections to other Greenlandic communities.
The airport serves as a social hub for Ilulissat residents, providing access to medical services, supplies, and connections to larger towns. During winter months when snow and ice block overland travel, flights often become the only way for people to move around and stay connected with the outside world.
There is no public bus service to and from the airport; hotel guests should ask staff about shuttle services or book a taxi in advance. Taxis can be called at +299 94 49 44 or booked through an app, though the app requires a Greenlandic phone number.
The facility is currently undergoing expansion with a new international terminal scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, which will enable direct flights to other countries. This upgrade will allow larger aircraft from Europe and the Americas to arrive, opening new travel routes.
