Hotel Arctic, world's most northerly 4-star hotel
Hotel Arctic is a four-star hotel in Ilulissat, on the west coast of Greenland, set directly beside the Icefjord with views of drifting icebergs. It offers seven room types, ranging from standard Superior rooms to outdoor rooms with private terraces facing the fjord.
The hotel was built to meet the growing demand for tourism in Ilulissat, a town with a long history as an Arctic settlement. Over time it expanded to become one of the largest accommodation and conference facilities in all of Greenland.
The hotel sits beside the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which shapes what guests see and feel throughout their stay. Staff speak Greenlandic, Danish, and English, giving the place a connection to the local community that visitors can notice in everyday interactions.
The hotel is a short distance from Ilulissat's small airport, the harbor, and the town center. Visitors arriving in winter should pack warm layers, as snow and cold can affect movement outside even short walks from the building.
During winter, the hotel runs a set of Aurora Cabins nearby where guests can sleep under an open roof and watch for the Northern Lights directly above them. Because the cabins sit close to the fjord, the lights sometimes reflect off the ice surface below, adding a second layer to what guests see in the sky.
