Koukoutamba Hydroelectric Power Station, Hydroelectric power station in Labé Region, Guinea
The Koukoutamba facility spans the Bafing River and holds a reservoir with a capacity of around 36 billion cubic meters of water. The dam generates approximately 294 megawatts of electricity and serves multiple functions across the region.
The Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal launched the project with China's Sinohydro company handling construction. This reflected decades of planning to bring hydroelectric power to the Sahel region.
The power station emerged from cooperation between four nations: Senegal, Guinea, Mauritania, and Mali share the generated electricity through their utility companies. This cross-border partnership has made the facility central to the region's energy supply.
The facility lies roughly 60 kilometers southeast of Tougué in a remote, rural setting. The best time to visit is during the dry season when roads are more passable and conditions at the site are more stable.
The dam's reservoir does more than generate electricity; it supports fishing, livestock farming, and irrigation across the region. This water resource has transformed local economic activities and created new opportunities for surrounding communities.
