Xerxes Canal, Ancient waterway in Chalkidiki, Greece

Xerxes Canal is an ancient waterway that crosses the Mount Athos peninsula in the Chalkidiki region, measuring roughly 30 meters wide. The shallow channel remains traceable in the landscape today, visible as a linear depression that cuts across the terrain.

A Persian king commissioned this canal in the early 5th century BCE after a storm damaged his fleet near the peninsula. The project was meant to provide his ships a safe passage around the dangerous coastline.

The waterway appears today as a shallow depression in the landscape that shows how people shaped the land by hand in ancient times. Walking along it, you sense the scale of human effort that transformed this terrain.

The canal sits in a rural agricultural area and can be difficult to spot without guidance, so visiting with local information or a guide helps. You will find it easier to understand the canal's path on clear days when the old channel stands out better against the landscape.

Archaeologists rediscovered and confirmed the canal's existence in 1991 using modern measurement techniques that revealed its exact boundaries. The findings prove this massive project was actually completed, despite disappearing from historical accounts.
